How to find the perfect rug

Find the right rug size

Here’s what matters

Choosing the right rug size plays a key role in the look and feel of your room. Start by considering the size of your room and how your furniture will be arranged.

The perfect rug for your living room

Use your sofa as a guide to find the right rug size for your living room. Just follow these steps:

01
Choose a rug that is at least as wide as your sofa – ideally around 20 cm wider.
02
Place all the furniture in your seating area partly or completely on your rug.
03
We recommend letting the rug extend around 10–20 cm under the sofa.
TIP

Rugs made from soft natural fibres create a pleasant indoor climate and add extra cosiness.

LIVING ROOM RUG GUIDE

Choose the right size for your space

Rug size XXL (300x400 cm)

Corner sofa with 5–6 seats

For a large seating area, an XXL rug (300x400 cm) is ideal. Place all furniture elements on the rug to create a cosy, spacious setting.

Rug size XL (250x350 cm)

4-seater sofa

A size XL rug (250x350 cm) is a great fit for a sofa with four seats. Place the sofa at the edge of the rug if you want it to appear larger.

Rug size L (200x300 cm)

3-seater sofa

For a sofa with three seats, we recommend a size L rug (200x300 cm). Position the sofa only slightly on the rug so the rug has enough space to stand out.

Rug size M (160x230 cm)

2-seater sofa

For a smaller seating area, a medium rug creates a balanced and comfortable arrangement.

Rug size in the bedroom

The focal point of your bedroom is your bed. Its size helps determine which rug is right for your space. Follow these steps to create a harmonious arrangement:

01
Do you want your bedside tables to stand on the rug or on the floor?
02
If your bed is centred, make sure at least 20 cm of the rug is visible on each side.
03
For larger rugs, create a visual connection by placing your bed partly or completely on the rug.
TIP

Rugs made from wool or cotton add warmth and cosiness to your bedroom. Soft high-pile designs made from synthetic fibres make getting out of bed feel especially comfortable. Minimalist low-pile rugs bring a sense of calm to the room.

LIVING ROOM RUG GUIDE

Choose the right size for your space

Rug size XXL (300x400 cm)

Large bed (approx. 200x200 cm)

For a spacious bedroom with a large bed, an XXL (300x400 cm) or XL (250x350 cm) rug is ideal. Place the bed in the centre of the rug to create a generous frame. If there’s enough space, position the bedside tables symmetrically next to your bed – this brings a sense of calm to the room.

Rug size L (200x300 cm)

Medium-sized bed (approx. 140x200 cm)

If you don’t have much space at the foot of your bed, using two rugs is a great solution. For a bed that’s 1.40 m wide or less, size XS rugs (80x150 cm) work well. If you want your bedside tables to stand on the rug, runners are also a lovely option.

Rug size XS (80x150 cm)

Small bed (approx. 90x200 cm)

A size S rug (120x170 cm) or XS rug (80x150 cm) is ideal for a bed that’s 90 cm wide. Place the rug next to the bed or slide it about a third of the way underneath. Position the rug and bedside table on the same side to give your room a more structured look.

Rug size S (120x170 cm)

2-seater sofa

For a smaller seating area, a medium rug creates a balanced and comfortable arrangement.

The right rug for your dining room

In the dining room, the right rug size depends on your dining table and seating. To find the perfect fit, just keep these points in mind:

01
Choose the right shape. Our recommendation: rectangular table – rectangular rug, square table – square rug, round table – round or square rug, oval table – oval or rectangular rug.
02
Your rug should extend far enough beyond the table so that your chairs have enough space, even when pulled out.
03
Centre the rug under the dining table to create a harmonious look.
TIP

Easy-care rugs made from durable synthetic fibres or washable designs are especially suitable for your dining room. It’s best to choose a flat-woven or low-pile rug, as this makes it easier to move the dining chairs.

LIVING ROOM RUG GUIDE

Choose the right size for your space

Rug size XXL (300x400 cm)

Dining area for 8 people

For a large dining table, an XXL rug(300x400 cm) or XL rug (250x350 cm) is ideal. Place the table and chairs in the centre of the rug so they form a cohesive unit. The chairs should fit completely on the rug, even when pulled out, to show it off at its best.

Rug size L (200x300 cm)

Dining area for 6 people

A size L rug (200x300 cm) is a good fit for a medium-sized dining table. Place the table in the centre of the rug so there’s enough space for the chairs. We recommend that the rug extends at least 60–70 cm beyond the table to keep the chairs stable when they are pulled out or pushed in.

Rug size XS (80x150 cm)

Dining area for 4 people with a rectangular rug

For a small dining room or a dining area in the living room with four chairs, a size M rectangular rug (160x230 cm) is ideal. The chairs should fit completely on the rug, even when pulled out.

Rug size S (120x170 cm)

Dining area for 4 people with a round rug

If you want your table and rug to match perfectly, choose the same shape for both. Depending on your room size and personal preference, a round rug in the standard size ⌀ 200 cm or ⌀ 250 cm is ideal for a table with four chairs.

Rug size XXL (300x400 cm)

Corner sofa with 5–6 seats

For a large seating area, an XXL rug is ideal. Place all furniture elements on the rug to create a cosy, spacious setting.

Rug sizes in the hallway

The right rug size for your hallway depends on the shape and size of the space. Your hallway will look bigger if you keep furniture off the rug and leave some space between the rug and the walls. Make sure to leave at least 20 cm of space around the rug. With these tips, you’ll quickly find the right size:

  • Narrow hallway: Runners are the perfect solution for narrow hallways. Depending on the length of the space, place one or more rugs in a row. Common sizes are 70x200 cm, 80x250 cm or 80x300 cm.
  • L-shaped hallway: Use several runners in a matching design to create harmony and a sense of space. For example, place two rugs at a right angle with a little space between them.
  • Large hallway: Round rugs soften the straight lines of the hallway and create a gentle contrast. Suitable sizes are ⌀ 100 cm, ⌀ 120 cm, ⌀ 150 cm and ⌀ 160 cm.

Tip: For your hallway, choose flat designs and robust materials like jute, sisal or synthetic fibres. They’re very durable and easy to clean.

How to measure for the right rug size

Want to make sure you find exactly the right rug size for your space? Then measure the area where your rug will go. Here’s the best way to do it:

01
Arrange your furniture the way you want it to be on the rug later.
02
Mark the desired area with masking tape or lay out newspapers. This will help you get a feel for how the rug might look in the room.
03
Check the width and length with a tape measure and note down the dimensions.
04
Choose the available size that comes closest to your vision.
TIP

Test the masking tape on an inconspicuous spot first to make sure it doesn’t leave any residue.
